May 29, 11:45-12:45: Polish Show Case at Northwest Folklife Festival

Northwest Folklife Festival presents Polish Show Case that includes a mixture of music and poetry. A local poet, Mr. Leszek Chudzinski will be reading poems from his collection Mozart and His Orchestra and Polish Choir Vivat Musica! will be singing Polish folk songs. The theme of this year's Festival is the Power of the Human Voice Through Song.

May 27, 28 & 29: Movie Lure by Agnieszka Smoczyńska at SIFF

Mazurek & Olszanska

The Seattle International Film Festival presents the movie Lure / Córki dansingu directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska and starring Marta Mazurek & Michalina Olszanska. This 2015 film is a stylish, in part psychedelic and in part hyper-violent story of two mermaid sisters making a big splash at a Warsaw night club with their luring voices and sexuality.

 

Where: on May 27 at 9:30 and May 28 at 4 pm at SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and also on May 29 at 9:15 pm at Shoreline Community College Theater; tickets $13 / $11

May 26, 8 pm: Marcin Pączkowski in Concert in Seattle

M. Pączkowski

Nonsequitur et al. present a concert in the Wayward Music Series by Marcin Pączkowski. The series features concerts of adventurous, experimental, innovative music. Mr. Pączkowski graduated from the Academy of Music in Cracow, Poland and is a graduate student at the UW School of Music working on fusing music and motion.

 

Where: Wayward Music Series at the Chapel Performance Space at the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle; suggested donation $15 - $5

May 20 & 26: Movie Demon by Marcin Wrona at SIFF

The Seattle International Film Festival presents the movie Demon directed by Marcin Wrona. This 2015 film is a contemporary ghost story about a man who seems to be possessed by a spirit from the past at his own wedding. The movie had very good reviews and was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.

 

Where: on May 20 at 9:30 pm at AMC Pacific Place 11 and on May 26 at 9:30 pm at SIFF Cinema Uptown; tickets $13 / $11

May 20 & 24, June 5: Movie Body by Malgorzata Szumowska at SIFF

The Seattle International Film Festival presents the movie Body / Ciało directed by Małgorzata Szumowska. This 2015 morbidly funny film is not afraid of finding humor in the character's spiritual crisis in a manner of contemporary Grimm tale. Szumowska made her name with the 2008 movie 33 Scenes From Life that garnered a lot of international awards.

 

Where: on May 20 at 6:30 pm at Lincoln Square Cinemas, on May 24 at 9 pm at AMC Pacific Place 11 and also on June 5 at 8:30 pm at SIFF Cinema Uptown; tickets $13 / $11

May 21, 7 pm: Play Promieniowanie about Maria Curie at the Polish Cultural Center

The Polish Theatre of Toronto presents a play in Polish Promieniowanie, rzecz o Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie by Kazimierz Braun and starring Maria Nowotarska and Agata Pilitowska. The play presents scenes from life of the scientist and Nobel-Prize winner Maria Curie. Mr. Braun is a writer, playwright, director and a university professor based in Buffalo, NY. The restaurant will be open from 5:30 pm.

May 15, 2:30 pm: Movie Planet Single by M. Okorn at SIFF Cinema Uptown

Stuhr & Więdłocha

Polish Film Festival in America (Chicago) presents the movie PlanetS ingle / Planeta Singli directed by Mitja Okorn in 2016. The film that is a current hit in Poland is a romantic comedy starring Maciej Stuhr as a host of a popular TV match up program and Agnieszka Więdłocha as an unexpected star of the show. In Polish with English subtitles.

May 14, 11 am: Polish Book Club Meeting at the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Nic zwyczajnego. O Wisławie Szymborskiej by Michał Rusinek, published by Znak in 2015. Mr. Rusinek, 44, was Ms. Szymborska's secretery for 15 years; he is also a translator and author of several children books. Nic zwyczajnego is his personal take at a biography of the famous poetess and Nobel prize winner with whom he enjoyed a great rapport.

This is an open meeting, drop by even if you haven't read the book.

May 14, 11:30 - 4 pm: Annual Pierogi Fest at the Polish Cultural Center

Pierogi!

This is the 11th edition of the Festival that brings a great mixture of Polish food and culture. It is a Polish dumpling extravaganza that serves several kinds of pierogi: meat, potato & cheese, plum etc. - get 12 pierogi for $10. Other Polish dishes available as well as Polish beer. Free attractions include: folk group performances, craft workshops (make your own pierogi!) & children activities. You can eat leisurely, listen to Polish music and have a good time. Also available: tea. coffee, soft drinks and desserts. On sale: Polish cutout art, Polish folk costumes, Polish sports scarves.

 

Performances TBD. Volunteers needed to run the event! Please contact John Golubiec.

May 6-12: Movie 11 minutes by J. Skolimowski at the Grand Illusion

The Grand Illusion presents 11 minutes, a 2016 film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski. The movie is an intricate and fascinating puzzle of several time threads that come together in an explosive climax. Skolimowski is an acclaimed director (Deep End, Essential Killing) that makes as man movies in Poland as abroad. In Polish w/ English subtitles.

May 7, from 6 pm: Ethnic Heritage Council Annual Dinner at the Polish Cultural Center

Martha Golubiec

The Ethnic Heritage Council of Seattle presents its Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony that includes Polish food and Croatian music. The following people will be honored for their long time involvement in their communities. Ms. Martha Golubiec, a member of our Polish community will receive the Aspasia Phoutrides Pulakis Memorial Award; and the Morovich Family, Cathryn Mirkovich Morovich, John Morovich and Joanne Morovich Abdo, members of the Croatian community, will receive the Gordon Ekvall Tracie Memorial Award. Congratulations!

May 6, 7 pm: Documentary Santa Rosa Odyssey by S. Grünberg at the UW

The Polish Film Club KINO OKO presents the 2012 documentary Santa Rosa. Odyssey in the Rhythm of Mariachi directed by Sławomir Grünberg. The film relates a story of over 1400 Polish refugees freed from the WWII Soviet camps, including hundreds of orphans, who found a friendly home in Santa Rosa, Mexico from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Grünberg is a Polish-born American documentary film maker and  will be present for at the screening. Also present, Consul of Mexico and Honorary Consul of Poland.

Supported by the Seattle Polish Foundation and the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee.

May 5, 7:45 pm: Documentary Karski and the Lords of Humanity in Seattle

Congregation Ezra Bessaroth presents the 2015 documentary Karski and the Lords of Humanity directed by Sławomir Grünberg. Jan Karski was a WWII Polish underground envoy who in 1942 brought from occupied Poland eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust to the attention of the US and British governments. Mr. Grünberg is a successful American documentary film maker and a graduate of the Polish Film School in Łódź. The director and the screenwriter, Mr. E. T. Wood, will be present at the screening.

Supported by the Polish Honorary Consul in Seattle, Seattle Polish Foundation and the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee.

May 5, 8 pm: Ania Stachurska & J. Archibald-Seiffer in Concert in Seattle

Ania Stachurska

Nonsequitur et al. present a concert in the Wayward Music Series by University of Washington doctoral composers Josh Archibald-Seiffer and Ania Stachurska. The series features concerts of adventurous, experimental and innovative music. Ms. Stachurska earned her BA in Music Composition at the Academy of Music in Cracow and a MM in Music Composition at the UW.

 May 3, all day: GiveBIG to Support Local Polish Orgs and Causes Online

On May 3, the Seattle Foundation (SF) hosts the annual GiveBIG event – a one-day, online charitable giving event to benefit local nonprofits. It's an opportunity to support your favorite Polish causes! Donations channeled through the GiveBIG event receive a small bonus from the SF - we expect the net bonus (the bonus minus costs) to be about 3% this year. You can also donate directly (see below) without the bonus. You can support all local Polish causes, events and orgs in the Pacific Northwest.

 

Our Seattle Polish Foundation (SPF, formerly Polish Home Foundation, PHF) partners with the SF for this event. May 1, 2:30 pm: Third of May Celebration at the Polish Cultural Center

Polish Home Association invites everybody to the 3rd of May celebration marking the anniversary of the first Polish constitution, which was enacted in 1791. The program prepared by Barbara Strutynski includes a performance by the Polish School in Seattle, Polish Scouts, the Young Polanie as well as PHA members, the Polish Choir and pianist Marzena Szlaga. The restaurant at the Polish Home is open from 12 pm to 4 pm.

May 1, 4* pm: Meeting with a Wheelchair Marathoner at the Polish Cultural Center

J. Radgowski and Zuzia

Janusz Radgowski is a disabled athlete who goes on a coast to coast super-marathon to raise money for a 2-years old Zuzia. Come to hear him talk about Zuzia and challenges of the Pacific - Atlantic journey that should end in Delaware in October. Mr. Radgowski's previous achievements include a super-marathon from Italy to Poland. The restaurant at the Polish Home is open from 12 pm to 4 pm.

The start of the journey is on May 2 at 9 am at the Sam Smith Park in Seattle. Come to cheer Janusz on the take-off!

 

Where: at the Polish Cultural Center Dom Polski; admission free; in Polish; 4* - please note, the meeting will start directly after the Third of May Celebration, which should be around 4 pm.
