July 18 & 19: Fusion Festival in Surrey, BC

Surrey is a city in Canada half way from the border crossing to Vancouver. The Fusion Festival is a big festival showcasing music, culture and culinary traditions of 20 nations. Among others, there is a Polish pavilion. Program for Sunday July 19 includes Polish groups and artists.

July 18, 10 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Bohater, spisek, śmierć. Wykłady żydowskie by Maria Janion published by WAB in 2009. Maria Janion is a very well known Polish writer, essayist and critic and a Professor of Literature at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Bohater ... discusses cultural roots of Polish perception of Jews and Jewish culture. The book can be bought on the Internet or borrowed from Club members. Club meetings are in Polish.

July 18, from 9:30 am: Polonia Tennis Tournament in Portland

The second Polonia Tennis Tournament in Portland builds on the success of the last year tournament. It's a sports event and a Polish community picnic at the same time - so bring your family and friends and something to eat and share. The tournament will lasts till 6 pm. Organized by the Polish Library Assn in Portland.

 

Where: at the Portland Community College courts at Rock Creek in Portland, OR; signup $15, general admission free

July 10-12: PKS plays in the All Nations Cup in Tukwila

Last year, the Polish soccer club of Seattle (PKS) exceeded all expectations by advancing to the semi-finals of the All Nations Cup in Tukwila. We wish the team even better luck this year! Come to cheer the team Poland during following matches of the first round

    Friday,     July 10, 8:00 pm: Poland vs. Iran, field #3

    Saturday, July 11, 6:30 pm: Poland vs. USA, field #2

    Sunday,   July 12, 3:30 pm: Poland vs. Eritrea, main field

Update: the team didn't advance to the next round.

July: KwieKulik as part of the SAM exhibition, till Sep 7, 2009

A video installation by two Polish visual artists, Zofia Kulik & Przemyslaw Kwiek, a duo known as KwieKulik, is part of the Target Practice: Painting Under Attack 1949-1978 exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum. The exhibition is about unconventional art forms by artists such as Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, the KwieKulik installation is called Variants of Red and Edward Gierek.

July: Polish Home open in July

In July 2009, the Polish Home in Seattle is open on Friday nights as usual, including the restaurant and the bar. It's closed on Sundays though.

The Polish Home will be closed in August and will reopen in September.
