Feb 28, 10 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Ostatni mazur by Andrew Tarnowski published by Wyd. WAB in 2008. The book paints a portrait of the Tarnowski aristocrat family over the canvas of 20c. upheavals. Andrew, himself a scion living in England, is a reporter and journalist. The book can be bought on the Internet (in English as The Last Mazurka) or borrowed from Club members. Club meetings are in Polish.

Feb 28, 9 pm: Disco at the Polish Home

Organized by Mloda Polonia and Polish Soccer Club of Seattle; new DJ Ronald will play Polish and club tracks. Everyone is invited!

 

Where: at the Polish Home; tickets $10 regular, ladies get free before 10 pm, you must be 21+ w/ID to attend

Feb 22, 7: M. Gawrysiak in a benefit concert at Mercer Island

Margaret Gawrysiak

Ms. Margaret Gawrysiak is a young mezzo-sporano returning to the Seattle Opera Young Artists program. Opera Plus invites to a Benefit Concert in Support of Seattle Opera Young Artists. The program includes arias, art songs and duets by Barber, Bellini, Puccini, Verdi and others sung by Ms. Gawrysiak and Megan Hart (soprano).

 

Where: Aljoya House (retirement community), Mercer Island; this is a donate-as-you-wish performance; refreshments will be served

Feb 21 - Mar 7: M. Walewska in Bluebeard's Castle at the Opera

Malgorzata Walewska

Ms. Malgorzata Walewska, a stunning mezzo-soprano, debuts at the Seattle Opera in the main role of Judith in Bluebeard's Castle by Bela Bartok's. Ms. Walewska sang major roles in Europe and debuted in the Metropolitan Opera in 2005. The evening also includes one-act opera Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg.  Also see a note about  a reception with Ms.Walewska on March 1, 2009.

Feb 21, from 6 pm, Viva Polonia Ball in Mountlake Terrace

This is a formal black tie dinner and dance evening for the benefit of the Polish Home in Seattle. Beautiful dance music provided by Oleg Ruvinov Band. Cocktail Hour 6-7 pm, sit-down dinner at 7 pm, dancing from 8 pm. Organized by Janusz Zoltowski & Viva Polonia Cultural Assn and the Polish Home Foundation. Profits from the Ball go to Polish Home expansion project.

Feb 18 & 19: Movie Katyn at PIFF in Portland

32nd Portland International Film Festival shows two Polish movies this year (see a note about Tricks). 2008 Oscar nominee Katyn (2007) is a moving reconstruction of the Soviet mass murder of Polish military and intellectual POW elite during WWII and its shattering effect on live and politics in post war communist Poland. Directed by Oscar winner Andrzej Wajda.

Feb 14, 8 pm: Valentine Day Party at the Polish Home

A Valentine party with the music by DJ Philip. Apetizers and beverages available for purchase, the restaurant open from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Feb 12, 12:15 pm: I. Kaminska plays at the Seattle Sherman Clay

Ivona Kaminska

Local pianist Ivona Kaminska will perform Schumann and Chopin in the Sherman Clay's regular Noon-Hour Concert series. The program includes Schumann's Kreisleriana op 16 by Schumann and Chopin's Nocturne in D-Flat Major. There will be a mini-lecture about Schumann before the concert. Dr. Kaminska is a Director and co-Founder of the Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah.

Feb 12, 7:30 pm: Polish Heroes - lecture Rescue in the Countryside at the UW

Prof. Stauter-Halstead

Prof. Keely Stauter-Halstead's lecture is titled Rescue in the Polish Countryside - Politics, Differentiation in the Occupied Village. Dr. Stauter-Halstead is a professor and the director of the Jewish Study Program at the Michigan State U. with interest in Galicia as part of the Habsburg Empire.

The Polish Heroes exhibition and series of lectures is organized by the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee, the Polish Consulate in Los Angeles and the WS Holocaust Resource Education Center.

Feb 10, 7 pm: Lecture on the legacy of Pope John Paul II at the UW

The lecture is part of the 2009 UW History Lecture Series The Vatican in the 20th Century: the Popes Confront a Turbulent World by Prof. James Felak. Prof. Felak's research focuses on Central Europe, especially Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland. The lecture 1978-2005: John Paul II helps bring down communism and is the most profound teacher of any modern pontiff discusses legacy of the Polish Pope.

Feb 7, 8 & 11: Movie Tricks at PIFF in Portland

32nd Portland International Film Festival shows two Polish movies this year (see a note about Katyn). Tricks / Sztuczki (2007), directed by Andrzej Jakimowski is a heart-warming story of a six-year old boy bent on connecting with his father whom he does not even know due to a divorce in the family.

Feb 5, 7 pm: Polish Heroes  - lecture by a Holocaust survivor at the UW

The lecture is by Henry Friedman, a Holocaust survivor who is one of the people rescued by the Poles. Mr. Friedman is the author of I'm No Hero, Journeys of a Holocaust Survivor.

The Polish Heroes exhibition and series of lectures is organized by the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee, the Polish Consulate in Los Angeles  and the WS Holocaust Resource Education Center.

Jan 12 - Feb 17: Polish Heroes  exhibition & lecture series at the UW

The exhibition Polish Heroes: Those Who Rescued Jews features profiles of Polish people who risked their lives and the lives of their families to rescue Jews during WWII in Poland. It runs from Jan 12 to Feb 15 at the UW Allen Library during library hours.

 

The lecture series covers highlights different aspects of the same topics topic.
