Polish Movie Sunday

Mar 31, noon - 7 pm: Spring Bazaar at the Polish Home

The Spring Bazaar is an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home made desserts and pastries. This is usually a quite crowded event, so come early.

Mar 29, 12:15 pm: I. Kaminska plays Schuman at the Seattle Sherman Clay

Ivona Kaminska

Local pianist Ivona Kaminska will perform works by Schumann and others in a solo performance as a part of Sherman Clay's regular noon-hour Thursday afternoon performances. Dr. Kaminska is a Director and co-Founder of the Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah.

This event presents two movies:

     4:30 pm State Witness (Swiadek koronny) dir. by J. Sypniewski and J. Filipiak

                  an action drama in Polish w/ English subtitles

      6:30 pm Rys, dir. by Stanislaw Tym, a comedy in Polish, note: no subtitles

Organized by Michal Friedrich and the Society for Arts.

Mar 25, 4:30 pm: I. Kaminska plays classics at Lutheran Church in Issaquah

This event was originally scheduled on March 11, 2007.

 

Local pianist Ivona Kaminska will perform religiously inspired masterworks by Franz Liszt as well as works by Ferruccio Busoni and J. S. Bach in this part of Our Savior Lutheran Church's new performance and lecture series. Dr. Kaminska is a Director and co-Founder of the Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah.

Mar 24, 7 pm: Russian ballads and romances at the Polish Home

Marzanna Bachowska

This concert of Russian ballads and romances written by Konstantin Sokolov, features Marzanna Bachowska as the special guest singer and Leszek Chudzinski as the MC. Mr. Sokolov is a local Russian artist and his ballads will be rendered by an all-Russian band including G. Babayan (leading guitar), V. Svyzdys (guitar) and O. Rurinov (keyboard).

Mar 14, 7:30 pm: Expansion Project meeting at the Polish Home

This is a monthly meeting of the Project committee. Come to discuss and support more changes at the Polish Home! This is an open meeting, everybody interested in the project is invited to come and discuss issues. Volunteers are also welcomed at the meeting!

Mar 10, from 5 pm: Polish Studies Spring Auction at the University of Washington

UW Suzzallo Library

This is the third annual auction organized by the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee for the benefit of the Polish Studies Endowment Fund, as well as related scholarship and lecture funds. After two very successful auctions at the Polish Home, the auction moves to the UW campus. The event starts with a silent auction and a complimentary wine from 5 pm, followed by a dinner and live auction at 7 pm with many interesting items to bid.

Mar 7, 9 pm: Music and Dance of Poland on KBTC Seattle/Tacoma

Music & Dance of Poland: Mazowsze is a public television production showcasing the most famous of the Polish folk troupes, with its dazzling dance choreography, variety of costumes and music ranging from folk songs to Chopin. Narrated by Bobby Vinton.

Mar 7, 7:30 pm: The Polish Americans on KBTC Seattle/Tacoma

Zbigniew Brzezinski

The Polish Americans is a public television special applauding the spirit, determination and solidarity of the Polish immigrants. The documentary profiles several prominent Polish-Americans, including Zbigniew Brzezinski, Barbara Mikulski, Stefanie Powers and Bobby Vinton.  Narrated by Casey Siemaszko.

 

KBTC also runs a Polish-themed fundraiser on March 7 from 7 pm to 10:30 pm. Polish-Americans are invited to staff the phones during the event. Please see contact below.

Mar 6, 7 pm: Polish music & conversation evening in Spokane

Kasia Haroldsen

An informal Polish-American group in Spokane invites to an evening of music and conversation at the Gonzaga University. Local musician Kasia Haroldsen will perform and sing her own compositions as well as some of the favorite Polish folk songs. Everybody interested in Polish culture in Eastern Washington is invited!

Mar 4, 4 pm: Chopin's Birthday Concert at the Polish Home

Marzena Lilian Szlaga Piano Studio invites to a musical celebration of the197th birthday of Frederick Chopin (born March 1, 1810). Ms Szlaga will open the evening with Grande Valse Brillante op.18. The program includes mazurkas, nocturnes, preludes, a polonaise, waltzes and etudes by Chopin as well as a Romance by   Henryk Wieniawski performed by the Studio students.

Mar 3, 11 am: Polish Book Club meeting

The book for the meeting is Anna In w grobowcach swiata by Olga Tokarczuk, published by Znak in 2006. Tokarczuk, 44, is a very popular writer, exploring both historical and mythical past; she was nominated to Nike for her most popular novel Prawiek i inne czasy / Primeaval and other times. Anna In tells the story from an old Sumerian myth about the title goddess descending to the underworld to meet her death and coming back.  The book can be bought on the Internet or borrowed from Club members.

Feb 24 – Mar 10: Ewa Podles in Julius Caesar at the Opera

Podles as Caesar (right)

Ewa Podles, the brilliant Polish contralto, becomes a regular visitor to Seattle. She is the winner of the 2003 Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year Award for her performance as Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma, and in the summer 2005 she received rave reviews as Erda and First Norn in Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelungen.  This time she will take on the title role in Julius Caesar by George Haendel.

 

Where: Seattle Opera at McCaw Hall; tickets; Ms. Podles sings in 5 out of 8 performances
