June 30, 11:30 am: Polish Story Time Poczytajki at the Bellevue Library

This is a meeting of the Polish Story Time Poczytajki for kids - Polish children books and stories are read to kids from kindergarten and early elementary grades. In this meeting: children poems, rhymes, songs and finger plays. Organized by Joanna Wroblewska with the help of the King County Public Libraries.

June 26 & 27: Young Polanie at the International Festival in Leavenworth

Leavenworth International Dance Festival features a great variety of folk dance troupes representing many nations: from several European countries through Egypt, Philippines to Brazil. The Polish Home group Young Polanie will present a Silesian dance and a medley of songs and dances from the Cracow region on June 26.

 

Where: the Festival is in Leavenworth, WA - go for a nice trip over the mountains

June 26, 11 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

 

The book for the meeting is Gulasz z Turula by Krzysztof Varga, published by Wyd. Czarne in 2008. Varga is a Polish writer, literary critic and journalist of Hungarian descent. The book is his very personal essay on Hungary, it's history, myths and traumas from the Polish perspective.

June 19, 6 am - 8 pm: Polish Presidential Elections at the Polish Home

Update: Results for the Seattle polling station #177: Kaczynski 132, Komorowski 121, full results here. The second & final round of voting is on July 3, 2010.

 

The early presidential elections in Poland after the tragic death of President Kaczynski have been called for June 20. In Seattle, there will be a polling station for Polish citizens at the Polish Home; voting in the United States is set on June 19, 2010. If you want to vote, you have to register - please read detailed info here (in Polish).

June 18, 2 pm: Movie The Reverse wins award at the Seattle International FF

Update: Polish director Borys Lankosz has won the Best New Director Award at 2010 SIFF. The award comes with an additional screening of the movie on June 18.

 

The Reverse (Rewers) was the best movie of the 2009 Gdynia Film Festival and the Polish entry to the Oscars. It is a wry look at political oppression of 1950s Poland. It is also a bestselling book by Andrzej Bart who was screenwriter for the movie.

June 16, 7:30 pm: Movie The Lost Requiem at the Polish Home

The newly organized Polish Film Club Oko in Seattle invites everyone to a screening of the documentary The Lost Requiem by famous Iranian director Khosrow Sinai. This 1980 film tells the story of the WWII exodus of Polish Army soldiers and civilians, in all about 120,000 survivors of Soviet gulag camps, to Persia (now Iran). In Farsi & English with English subtitles. There will be an intro to the movie and a discussion afterwards.

   

Where: at the Polish Home; admission free, discussion after the screening. Also: A Trip To Nowhere books & DVDs will be on sale.

June 8 & 9: Movie The Reverse at the Seattle International FF

The Seattle International Film Festival presents the best movie of the 2009 Gdynia Film Festival and the Polish entry to this year’s Oscars. June 4-6: Movie All That I Love at the Seattle International FF

All That I Love (Wszstko co kocham), a feature debut by dir. Jacek Borcuch was the first Polish movie at Sundance and it became an instant hit. This is a coming-of-age story set  in a small town in Poland during the Solidarity days of 1980. A group of high-school friends are all into their rock-punk band but there is no escape from politics and real life choices.

 

SIFF presents unprecedented 5 Polish movies this year from May 23 to June 9, 2010.

June 5, 8 pm: International Dance at the South Lake Union Club in Seattle

This is the 32nd International Dance staged by local clubs representing several Central & East European nations and sponsored by the Austria Club of Washington. Delicious ethnic food, live music and entertainment. Doors open at 6:30, dancing starts at 8 pm. Soft drinks available all evening. This event is sponsored by the Polish Home Association.

 

Where: at the South Lake Union Park; tickets $15; this is a BYOB event; parking might be a problem due to construction is the area, please carpool

June 4,  7:30 pm: A Chopin Celebration Series, p. III, at the U. Christian Church

The University Christian Church in Seattle invites to a recital series celebrating Chopin's 200th birthday and performed by Mark Salman. Mr. Salman is a renown pianist based in Seattle who performed at the Carnegie Hall and is best known for his expertise on Beethoven. The series includes three recitals. Program for part III features works from Chopin's later years.

 

Where: at the University Christian Church in Seattle tickets $25 regular, $15 students & seniors, $60 for the series of three recitals on May 7 & 21 and June 4, 2010

June 2, 7 pm: Movie Mother Joan of the Angels at the Seattle International FF

Seattle International Film Festival presents Mother Joan of The Angels (Matka Joanna od Aniolow), a recently restored 1961 masterpiece directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz. Set in an 18c. Catholic convent in  the eastern fringes of then Poland (close to Smolensk), the film follows Fr. Suryn's attempts to drive out demons possessing the mother superior and the nuns. This universal theme movie of passion and crime won a Silver Palm at Cannes.

June 2, 9:30 pm: Movie Night Train at the Seattle International FF

Night Train (Pociag, 1959) is another recently restored famous movie by the Polish director Jerzy Kawalerowicz.  A great Hitchcock-style thriller, ambiguous and full of suspense, the film was also praised for his depiction of the train's microcosm as a parable for the repressive society, and a fine example of the Polish School of cinema.
