Feb 28: Movie The Reverse at International FF in Portland

The 33rd Portland International Film Festival presents the best movie of the 2009 Gdynia Film Festival and the Polish entry to this year’s Oscars. The Reverse (Rewers) directed by Borys Lankosz is a wry look at political oppression of 1950s Poland. It is also a bestselling book by Andrzej Bart who was screenwriter for the movie.

Apparently this is an additional screening of the movie at IFF.

Feb 27, 11 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Rewers by Andrzej Bart published by Wyd. WAB in 2009. Rewers, with its comedic-thriller style, is a fresh take on Stalinist times in Poland; it is also an award winning movie directed by Borys Lankosz. Andrzej Bart is a novelist and screenwriter whose works frequently have some unusual twists. The book is available on the Internet or from Club members. Club meetings are in Polish.

Feb 27, 7:30 pm: Jacek Wojcicki in concert at the Polish Home

Jacek Wójcicki is a known Polish actor and singer and a member of the Piwnica pod Baranami cabaret troupe. His program From La Scala to Piwnica pod Baranami features hit songs from the Piwnica programs as well as from movies and general repertoire.

Feb 27,  7 pm: Celebration concert Happy 200th Birthday, Chopin! in Portland

Chopin in Warsaw

Polish Hall in Portland invites to a special evening celebrating 200th birthday of the great composer. The program includes presentation by Prof. Kenneth Kleszynski on Chopin's Life and Music, a piano concert of Chopin's music by Jim-Issac Chua and champagne.

Feb 26, 7:30 pm: Polish Gala at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC

Canadian Polonia invites to a gala concert and party Polonia to Polish Olympians. The concert directed by J. Kopczynski featureses performances by a Polish violin trio Alizma, singers Jacek Wojcicki and Natasza Urbanska and the Polish Cabaret Pod Banka from Toronto. The after concert party includes Irena Szewinska as the honorary guest and members of the Polish Olympic team.

Feb 20,  2:30 pm: Sing with Your Fingers Chopin concert at the Frye Art Museum

Chopin Academy of Music invites to a special piano concert celebrating the 200th birthday anniversary of Frederic Chopin with an evening devoted to his music. The program includes mazurkas, nocturnes, preludes, polonaises, waltzes and etudes by Chopin performed by students of the Academy.

Feb 16: Paczkipaloosa & Fat Tuesday ponchki in Seattle

For the past couple of years local bakeries noticed ponchki (pączki) as a hot Fat Tuesday item.

 

Georges Sausage & Deli I expect them to have pączki but need to confirm

Bakery Nouveau (West Seattle), great pączki, they can spell it, too

Metropolitan Market invites to Paczkipaloosa at all Seattle stores from Feb 10 to Fat Tuesday and to Paczki Eat & Race Contest in West Seattle on Feb 16. Readers say these taste more like hole-less doughnuts than pączki.

Feb 13 & 15: Short movie Poste Restante at the International FF in Portland

Poste Restante, a short directed by Marcel Lozinski is part of the Short Cuts I: International Ties program at the 33rd Portland International Film Festival. Lozinski is a distinguished Polish director, famous for his award winning documentaries.

Feb 13, 2:15 pm: Poznanski poetry reading at  the Green Lake Library

Polish Book Club in Seattle and Polish Home Foundation invite to a poetry reading event featuring poems by Kazimierz Poznanski from his soon to be published volume Dlugi wiersz. Mr. Poznanski is Univ. of Washington professor of economics, a painter and a poet. His poems reflect on love, life and loss. Discussion and Q&A follow. Seattle-Gdynia Sister City Assn. invites to a public presentation by the University of Washington Fulbright Scholar Dr. Przemyslaw Chojnowski on Andrzej Wajda's Argument with History. This discussion will address the Oscar winning Polish film director's vision of post-war Polish society and culture in the context of its influence by and release from Soviet domination.

Feb 9, 8 pm: Garrick Ohlsson plays Chopin at the UW Meany Hall

Garrick Ohlsson

Garrick Ohlsson is an excellent pianist and the only American to win the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (in 1970). This is his second concert in the UW World Series at Meany Hall. The program includes 2 Polonaises op 40, Sonata op 35, Mazurkas op 7 & 30, Waltz op 42 & Scherzo op 31.

Feb 7, 5:30 pm: 2010 NW Chopin Festival winners’ concert at the Frye

Frederic Chopin

This concert features the winners of the 2010 Chopin Festival. As usual, the best young artists from our state are expected to deliver great performances of Chopin music. Refreshments will be provided. Organized by the Northwest Council of the Chopin Foundation and supported by Sherman Clay.

Feb 6, 7:30 pm: Ich Troje band in concert at the Polish Home

Ich Troje

Ich Troje, that is Michal & Ania Wisniewski and Jacek Lagwa, a very popular music band from Poland, returns to Seattle after a smashing success of their concerts in Bellevue and Seattle in February 2006 & 2007. Their songs with nice and catchy melodies appeal both to younger and older generation and  their concerts are always great shows. The restaurant will be open before and during the show.

Feb 6, from 8:30 am: The Annual NW Chopin Festival in downtown Seattle

Frederic Chopin

The Chopin Foundation presents its annual Chopin Festival, this year attracting nearly 150 piano students from across our state.  The Competition runs from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Limited seating will be available due to the large number of participants, divided into four categories, each with its own eminent adjudicator. The prize winner concert is on Feb 7, 2010, see a separate note.

Feb 5-7: Ada Rosman Jewelry at the Bellevue Art Museum

The Bellevue Art Museum invites to INDULGE, a jewelry marketplace featuring fancy jewelry designs by artist from USA and Canada. Ms. Ada Rosman is a local Polish-American metalsmith and jewelry designer. She graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA in Metals in 2007. Another local artist at the event is Stephanie Tomczak.
